Hell, Heretics, and Humanists: The World and Ideas of the Most Interesting Jewish Rebels throughout History, Part 5: Shabtay Tzvi

Rabbi Tzemah Yoreh

Before Jews for Jesus and Chabad there were other messianic Jewish movements. One of the most influential was the Sabbatean movement, led by the charismatic Shabtay Tzvi. The son of a poultry merchant from Smyrna, born on Tisha B’av, he declared he was the Messiah in his early 20’s, and became well-known for his debauchery and sin. His journey led him to Jerusalem, and finally in chains in 1666 to the Grand Vizier in Constantinople where he converted to Islam to escape death, though that did not deter his most ardent followers.
