Shabbat Service and Cultural Program

We are happy to welcome back a well received speaker:

Caraid O’Brien on Sholem Asch

Irish born writer and performer Caraid O’Brien is returning to speak about the brilliant Yiddish dramatist, novelist and interfaith pioneer Sholem Asch.  She will discuss her experiences translating and performing in his most famous play “God of Vengeance”, which was criticized for its representation of “lesbian love”, when first performed on the Lower East Side 100 years ago.  Additionally, she will talk about the four never-before translated plays by Sholem Asch that she is working on now as a Translation Fellow at the Yiddish Book Center.
