Humanistic Kaddish at Freedom Place

Join us at the corner of Freedom Place and 70th Street by the memorial plaque, to recite our Humanistic Kaddish, the Jewish mourners’ prayer, for Andrew, James and Michael, the victims of the freedom summer murders. The recitation will be led by Rabbi Tzemah Yoreh.

In June 1964, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner from NYC, and James Chaney from Meridien, Mississippi, were part of the Freedom Summer campaign to register African-Americans in Mississippi to vote. Many of you know that they were murdered by the KKK. Although it took until 2005 for one person to be tried but only convicted of manslaughter, their heroic actions and their deaths galvanized the public and helped pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Andrew, James and Michael were lynched for fighting voter suppression in 1964. Yet in 2018, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, and voter suppression is still very much alive in 2020. Let’s honor their legacy by joining the mission and efforts of the Andrew Goodman Foundation and Reclaim Our Vote.

The UWS’s Freedom Place is named in their memory.
