CCNY, Corruption and a Scandal that Shook New York City – Matthew Goodman

City College of New York was a tuition-free, merit-based college in Harlem known more for its mostly Jewish intellectualism and political radicalism, than its athletic prowess. Only two years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947, CCNY had a basketball team, The Beavers, most of whose players were either Jewish or African-American. Enter Borsch Belt hotels and cops on the payroll of gangsters, which converge on the world of big-time college sports. In his new book, THE CITY GAME: Triumph, Scandal, and a Legendary Basketball Team (2019, Ballatine Books) Matthew Goodman examines questions of honesty, values, and integrity of both an educational institution and the people responsible for the scandal.

After the program, please stay connected for some virtual schmoozing.
