Welcome to City Congregation!
Located on the Upper West Side, the City Congregation was founded in 1991 as the New York City affiliate of the Society for Humanistic Judaism. Our membership is diverse as it is widespread, connecting secular Jews of all ages, races, and sexualities from across the tri-state area, but we all band together in search of something cultural, spiritual, intellectual, or social. What we have in common is a commitment to our shared secular values and future.
What we do
City Congregations offers a variety of Shabbat services and holiday programs for Chanukah, Passover, and the High Holidays, as well as a number of traditional and non-traditional mixers. In addition, our religious education program spans from preschool to elementary school to Bar & Bat Mitzvah preparation in middle school. We also hold Adult Perspectives classes, relating religion to applicable situations throughout your everyday life.
What we believe
Humanistic Judaism is a secular Jewish denomination that celebrates the centrality of human judgment and human power from a uniquely Jewish perspective. As humanists we believe that reason, rather than faith, is the source of truth, and that human intelligence and experience are capable of guiding our lives. As Jews we express these beliefs through the culture and practices that have evolved over centuries of Jewish history.
