The Museum that Never Was and Why
The book, Homes of the Past, tells the story of how immigrant Jewish scholars in 1940s New York sought to build a museum to commemorate their lost worlds and people.
We’ll discuss the purpose, development, and ultimate fate of a museum that was never completed using Professor Shandler’s insight and research into the surviving archival sources. The museum project marked a critical inflection point in the dynamic inter-relations between Jews in America and Eastern Europe.
Jeffrey Shandler is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Jewish Studies at Rutgers University. He is the author or translator of 16 books on modern and contemporary Jewish life, including Yiddish: a Biography of a Language. He lives in New York City.
Longtime member Peter Mones will moderate the discussion.
Professor Shandler’s book is available at local independent bookstores or from online independent bookstores.
