Shabbat Service and Cultural Program

Our Shabbat service, followed by a Cultural program:

Look up! Faces in Stone by Professor Robert Arthur King

As we walk around Manhattan we don’t see faces these days–mostly masks, eyes and foreheads. However, all around the city there are faces on facades of buildings offering a smile or stare! Join architect/photographer Robert Arthur King as he shares with us the history of stone and terracotta faces and images that are on the buildings of the Lower East Side. Who designed them? Who built them? Why did those tenement houses invite immigrants (perhaps our great-grandparents or grandparents) to live in those buildings? Mr. King will share his pictures and commentary examining carved faces that delight, invite, or warn us, embellishing houses from Grand Street to Madison Street. There may be a building you’ve walked by a hundred times which has images on the façade you’ve never noticed! Starting now, look up as you walk the city and join us virtually as we tour the Lower East Side with Professor King.

Robert Arthur King, FAIA, is a registered architect and a certified interior designer. He is a graduate of Columbia University School of Architecture and the Architectural Association in London.
