NPR founding mothers Lisa Napoli

Cultural program:

In 2021, Lisa Napoli published Susan, Linda, Nina & Cokie—The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR, a collective history of the “original” women of National Public Radio: Linda Wertheimer, Cokie Roberts, Susan Stamberg, and Nina Totenberg. These women fought to create the sound, and build the integrity, of what we now know as NPR via Morning Edition and All Things Considered. With some support, but also in defiance of the “old boys world” of radio news, they established a unique and successful format and style which we enjoy today. In her book, Lisa Napoli recalls the period of women breaking into news radio and their legacy, finally recognized in NPR’s 50th year.

Lisa Napoli, born and raised in Brooklyn, but later based in Los Angeles, has a long career in journalism. She has written four books and covered presidential campaigns, the Waco hostage standoff, an outdoor hacker convention, and the culture of the internet and digital technology, all at a wide variety of news outlets including the New York Times CyberTimesMSNBC, and the public radio show Marketplace.
