Facing Fear: Jason Cohen, director of restorative justice documentaries in film and TV

Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Jason Cohen will share his experiences making his Oscar-Nominated short subject documentary, Facing Fear, about a former neo-Nazi and one of his victims, and their reconciliation 25 years after the incident. Confronting violence and hatred, this film explores the original incident, the chance meeting of the two men many years later, and their work to come to terms with what happened. Jason will address the challenges for viewers and how making the film affected the creative people involved. Our discussion will illuminate Jason’s passion as a documentarian—truth teller— through the restorative justice community.

Jason Cohen has produced and directed film and television projects that cover a broad range of topics over the past 25 years. He received the 2020 Director’s Guild of America award. He was the co-creator, executive producer and director of all eight episodes of CNN’s The Redemption Project with Van Jones, a documentary series that looks at restorative justice, and produced many other documentaries. Cohen’s other works include: producer, cameraman, and sound mixer roles for PBS, BBC, cable outlets, ESPN, NFL Network and HBO.  His work has taken him to projects on all seven continents.

Jason was raised in West Caldwell, NJ and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in journalism and film.   He lives in Berkeley, California with his wife and two sons.
