Modern Jewish History Class

Modern Jewish History: The United States and Israel

At this point in time it is more important than ever to know where we came from.

In this 10-part class we will follow the twin migrations of Jews from the Europe and the Middle East to the United States and Israel beginning in the late 19th century culminating in the present day. We will take a look at how the ideological movements of the modern period, including Zionism, and anti-Zionism, the Bundt, Hasidism, and Jewish denominationalism affected the trajectories of Jewish communities. We will consider the many wars fought over Israel beginning with the war between Britain and the Ottoman empire, and culminating in the Gaza war between Hamas and Israel. We will not shy away from difficult topics such as Palestinian liberation movements, war crimes, and terrorism. We will be guided by historical data and not any particular ideology beyond a commitment to rigor and intellectual honesty. This class is open to members only. Guests may attend but only with registration.
