Cultural program: American Baby by Gabrielle Glaser

Gabrielle Glaser will present to us her examination of adoption in Jewish families and Jewish adoption services. There is a history of exploitative adoption systems in the U.S., some with the best intentions and others that served different purposes, which did not benefit the mothers and families. What has changed since those “dark” days not so long ago (1960s)? Can we learn from this experience or will history repeat itself? This is also a story of discovery, reconciliation, and celebration.

Gabrielle Glaser is the author, most recently, of “American Baby: A Mother, A Child, and the Shadow History of Adoption,” which tells the shocking truth about postwar adoption in America through the bittersweet story of one Jewish teenager, the son she was forced to relinquish, and their lifelong search to find each other. Earlier this year, the book was featured on the cover of the New York Times Book Review and CBS Sunday Morning, and was just named in the 100 Notable Books list by the New York Times.

Gabrielle Glaser’s 2013 book, Why Women Drink – And How They Can Regain Control, a New York Times bestseller, examines women’s drinking and the American rehab industry. She has covered the intersection of health, medicine, and culture for The New York Times and other publications, including The Atlantic, The Daily Beast, The Washington Post, and Scientific American, and is the mother of three grown daughters.
