Cultural program:

Contemplation: Humanistic Reflections by Members of TCC
Book Launch Party

Please join us as we celebrate the launch of Contemplation: Humanistic Reflections by Members of The City Congregation. This book is the realization of Rabbi Emeritus Peter Schweitzer’s long held desire to share the writings of TCC members that have been presented at the High Holidays, Shabbat programs and other gatherings.

We’ll hear from Rabbi Schweitzer and the editors of the book, Carol Sternhell and Ernie Rubinstein, as well as several contributors.

In keeping with the tradition of pre-pandemic book launches, please bring wine (or your beverage of choice) and cheese to your computer as we celebrate 23 years of TCC member writings.

Rabbi Emeritus Peter Schweitzer was TCC’s first rabbi and served for 26 years. His unbounded energy and commitment were instrumental in TCC’s growth from a small gathering of like-minded people in a living room to a 100-family established congregation, in the competitive world of New York City Jewish institutions.

Editor Carol Sternhell has been a member of TCC for more than twenty years. She has served on many TCC committees and taken on a variety of volunteer roles; she found this latest project, working on Contemplation, to be especially rewarding. In her life outside TCC she is a professor of journalism at New York University (for forty years), a progressive feminist, an obsessive reader of novels, and a doting great-aunt.

Editor Ernie Rubinstein has been a member of TCC since 2016, and since then has served on several committees, a term on the board, and as a b’mitzvah mentor. He was a key contributor to the liturgy committee’s work on TCC’s book of High Holiday Services. He was honored to co-edit the book, Contemplation. Outside TCC, and since 1995, he has taught classes in philosophy and religion at NYU’s School of Professional Studies.
