The Man who Made Archie Bunker Lovable: Breaking Barriers on TV in our Living Rooms
“I am convinced that laughter adds time to one’s life.”—Norman Lear, who lived to 101 years old.
Beginning in the 1970s, writer and producer Norman Lear (1922-2023) altered the television landscape with All in the Family, Maude, Good Times, and others. For over half a century his body of work boldly tackled race, class, sexuality, politics, and religion―taboo topics for TV comedy. How did his Jewish background contribute to his worldview―projecting his values, ethics?
Our speaker will be Tripp Whetsell, biographer of Norman Lear, entertainment journalist, show-business historian, and adjunct media studies professor at Emerson College in Boston.
We kindly ask for attendees to bring a food item contribution for the Oneg following this program.
