Cultural program: Jewish Women of Rebetika (Greek blues)
Using archival recordings, this unique program presented by vocalist Carol Freeman illuminates the life and music of several of the great Jewish female singers of Rebetika of the past including Roza Eskenazi, Stella Haskill, and Amalia Vaka.
Carol will introduce us to the Greek Jewish women singers of 1930s Cabaret. In a world hostile to Jews, these performers sang to mostly non-Jewish audiences who did not realize the entertainers were Jewish. Through song, history, recordings and personal profiles of the artists she’ll examine the by-gone world of arts, politics, and Jewish and non-Jewish café society.
Carol Freeman is a performer, researcher, and teacher of a variety of East European, Judaic, and Balkan singing traditions. She has performed since 1970 as a vocalist for Song of the Shtetl, a musical ensemble, and as a solo interpreter of traditional song. Carol has appeared at arts centers, music festivals, museums, universities, folklore seminars and on radio and television throughout North America.
