Johnny Clegg – Scatterling of Africa
Come join us for Shabbat and stay for a wonderful cultural program about SHJ’s Role Model of the Year, Johnny Clegg — South African musician, anthropologist, humanist and anti-apartheid activist. Clegg is the son of a Jewish mother and Scottish father and was one of the first musicians to form an interracial group when “race mixing” was still illegal in South Africa. He was a great champion of the Zulu culture – so much so that he was known as “The White Zulu.” Congregation member Susan Ryan will discuss the life and career of this fascinating man and play some of the music from his most famous musical collaborations, Juluka and Savuka, for people to enjoy and learn more about.
