The Evolution of American Jewish Humor

It’s nearly impossible to think about American comedy without thinking about the many Jews who have contributed to it. Similarly, it’s hard to conceive of secular Jewish American culture without reference to humor. Yet Jewish humor in the United States is a moving target. This talk will examine the ways American Jewish humor changed during the twentieth century. Lots of appropriate jokes will illustrate the talk.

Richard Strean‘s family considers him largely unqualified to give this talk but he did teach history for a couple of decades and has told jokes for a couple of decades more. Although there are many books of and about Jewish humor, he promises that he has not read any of them.
