Ta Sh’ma (Come Hear!) for Talmud (call to study)

Why would Secular Humanistic Jews even want to know Talmud, much less study it? What can we get out of writings by esteemed rabbis in history? Do their writings help us understand our current world? Ourselves? Talmud, now freely available and translated into English on the internet, has become accessible for all. For over eight years, a small band of City Congregation members has been meeting weekly to discuss various sections of Talmud, with a young, vibrant teacher.

What happens in those sessions?

For generations only men studied Talmud. However, this is 2023, and Talmud is studied by thousands of people everywhere, including Modern Orthodox women. Our study is open to all who wish to understand the basics of Jewish law and ethics. We can’t guarantee you’ll become Talmudists or lawyers, but hopefully you’ll learn what this ancient text, with contemporary applications, can offer to the secular world in the 21st century.

Long time TCC member Peter Mones (admittedly, not an expert, but a dedicated student of the TCC Talmud class) will introduce how Secular Humanistic Jews navigate various sections of this ancient work. He’ll lay out the groundwork and we’ll all participate in a sampling of Talmud.

No experience necessary—only a willingness to be curious and ask questions!

Our Onegs are potluck so please bring a dessert (i.e. pastry, cookies, or fruit).
