Shabbat Service and Cultural Program – Black history month
Throughout American history, numerous agnostic and atheist “hidden figures” within the African American community such as Bayard Rustin, A. Philip Randolph, James Baldwin, Zora Neal Hurston and Lorraine Hansberry have left their mark on politics and the arts. Although under 10 percent of African Americans are atheist or agnostic, Black non-believers and skeptics have left and continue to leave their imprint on American life. Our speaker, David Chance, will throw a well-deserved spotlight on these hidden figures.
David Chance’s experience in the church left him with more questions than answers, so as soon as he was no longer forced to go to church, he stopped going. As a “seeker” he explored Islam, the occult, Scientology, and various African spiritual systems. Along his life’s journey, he earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Literature and Communications, spent almost 32 years at New York City Transit, and worked with a few activist organizations. No longer a seeker, he has settled into a spirituality which has no dogma and doesn’t require a deity.
