On May 7th, 2021, we had the honor and pleasure of having a member Lina Miller give a talk. She was gracious enough to allow us to share a recording of her presentation about Jewish Geography and Genealogy, as reflected in the journey to NYC through the lens of her own family.
In the early 20th century, Jews were arriving in New York City from all over the world. Lina Miller is on a multi-year mission to discover her own roots by researching where her ancestors lived before they landed in New York Harbor. In this program, Linal discussed historical geography and geopolitics, and how they frame the pursuit of personal ancestry for Jews of Eastern European heritage, as well as other obstacles one may encounter in genealogical research. She also provided tips and tricks to get around this challenges.
Lina Miller is a member of The City Congregation and joined the Board in 2020. In 2019, she led a Jewish trivia program for the Shabbat marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, and gave a High Holiday talk about the complexities of modern Jewish identity.
