Shabbat Cultural Program: Going South

Dr Debra Schultz, the book Going South

On May 1st, 2020, we had the honor and pleasure of having a guest speaker: Dr. Debra L. Schultz, who was gracious enough to allow us to share a recording of her presentation.

Dr. Schultz spoke about her book, Going South: Jewish Women in the Civil Rights Movement. The book follows a group of Jewish women who came of age in the shadow of the Holocaust, were deeply committed to social justice and put their bodies and lives on the line to fight racism. Actively rejecting the post-war idyll of suburban, Jewish, middle-class life, these women were deeply influenced by Jewish notions of morality and social justice. Many thus perceived the call of the movement as positively irresistible.
You can find the book at your local book store via indiebound.

Dr. Debra L. Schultz teaches civil rights, women’s, and 20th century history at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York.  She is also a founding program director of the Soros Foundation’s Women’s Program.  Her current research examines public memorialization of the civil rights movement.
